Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav garlands an idol of lord Krishna on Janmashtami at police lines in Lucknow on Aug 17, 2014. The festival of Janmashtami commemorates the birthday of Hindu Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The festival is also referred to as Gokulashtami, or Govinda in Maharashtra. Hindu Lord Krisha is revered for his wisdom about how to live life on Earth. Mathura, located about 50 km from Agra and 145 from Delhi, is the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The celebrations are on in the entire Braj area comprising Mathura, Agra and Hathras districts.
Mathura’s ghats are filled with pilgrims who began arriving from 14 August, 2014, taking advantage of the extended holidays including Independence Day Friday. An official said an estimated 200,000 people had already gathered in the region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also greeted the nation on the occasion of this year’s Janmashtami. “Greetings on Janmashtami! May Lord Krishna bless our lives with peace, prosperity and happiness,” he tweeted.
