
Union Water Resources Minister meets Chief Minister
Discussions held on irrigation projects and cleaning up of rivers
State government to cooperate with all efforts initiated by the Union Government
Ganga University will be established in the state
Office of the Ganga Flood Control Centre to be opened in Lucknow
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mr. Akhilesh Yadav today met Union Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Ms. Uma Bharati at his official residence. Deliberations were held on irrigation projects and cleaning up of rivers. The Chief Minister told the union minister that the state Government was committed to make Ganga and its tributaries clean and pure.
The state government was making its own efforts in this direction, the Chief Minister said while assuring the visiting minister that his government would extend all assistance and cooperation to all efforts initiated by the union government. Referring to the cleaning up of tributaries and assisting rivers of Ganga, the Chief Minister said it was imperative that they were also cleaned up to ensure pure and clean flow of Ganga. The Chief Minister also expected help from the Union Government to clean up Kali river.

The Union Minister spoke about establishing the Ganga University, to which the Chief Minister assured all help at all levels and requested Ms. Bharati to establish an office of the Ganga Flood Control Centre in the state. Approving of the same, Ms. Bharati said this office will be opened up in Lucknow. The Chief Minister also requested the Union Minister to make available the centre’s share in irrigation projects under the AIBP programme.
A consensus was arrived at the meeting to divert drains (nullahs) in Kanpur, Mathura and Vrindavan and to ensure that treated water reaches the river. It was also decided that the state government would sent to the Government of India, all river front development proposals for places like Gadhmukteshwar, Kannauj, Kanpur, Allahabad and Varanasi situated on the banks of river Ganga.
It was also agreed upon that to take the points on which decisions was made during todays meeting, separate meeting between the UP Chief Secretary and the Union Water Resources Secretary would be held. Also present during the meeting were Irrigation Minister Mr. Shivpal Singh Yadav, Chief Secretary Mr. Alok Ranjan, Union Water Resources Secretary and Principal Secretary Irrigation Mr. Deepak Singhal.
