Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mr. Akhilesh Yadav has said that the Samajwadi government is making concerted efforts to promote sports in the state and added that new stadiums, swimming pools and other sports related infrastructure was being developed. The state government, he pointed out, was honouring national and international level sportspersons so that talent is promoted and encouraged.
The Chief Minister made these remarks at his official residence on Wednesday during a programme where an MoU was signed and exchanged between the state government and the UPCA for holding of national and international Cricket matches at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur. An MoU was also signed between the developers and UPCA for holding international cricket matches at the under-construction international cricket stadium in Lucknow.
The Chief Minister also launched a website : gazetteer.up.nic.in in which gazette of 54 districts would be available online. On the occasion, the Chief Minister said that for many reasons no international cricket matches were held at the Green Park in Kanpur but after the MoU between the state government and the UPCA, this would now be possible. For this, he also lauded the efforts of Secretary of the UPCA Mr. Rajiv Shukla.
Mr. Yadav further said that cricket was a very popular sport in the country and hence organizing international level matches in the state was very necessary and pointed out that after construction of the world class stadium in the state capital international matches would be possible in the city. All three formats of the sport were very popular in the country and that T-20 format and even tennis ball cricket was gaining popularity in the country, the Chief Minister said.
He also said that the present state government was trying its best to develop sports infrastructure in UP and working to promote sports in all forms. Referring to the construction of swimming pools in Lucknow and Saifai, the Chief Minister said better sports infrastructure would lead to coming out of sports talent and UP would emerge as a front ranking sportspersons producing state.
It may be pointed out here that BCCI will only allot matches to the UPCA if its has its own cricket stadium or it has a 30 year contract with owner of any cricket stadium. Keeping this clause in mind, the Green Park stadium in Kanpur is being given to the UPCA for 30 years under the defined terms under a license. Under this contract, the UPCA will maintain the defined area under its own expenses. However, full ownership of the state government on the stadium would continue.
After this, by click of the mouse, the Chief Minister launched the comprehensive website of gazettes of districts : gazetteer.up.nic.in. By this website, anyone can get detailed information of the geographical position, natural resources, climate, flora and fauna, agriculture, industry and trade, economic activities, telecom and traffic facilities, education, social and cultural and many other vital information of districts. Mr. Yadav pointed out that gazetteer of any place was a vital document of any place and was an important heritage of any district, state or country, something which gives information of the past and present. Digitization of the gazetteer was an important step, he further added.
Addressing the function, Chief Secretary Mr. Alok Ranjan said that foundation stone of the Sports Complex Project in Lucknow has already been laid and work was on in full swing. The estimated cost of it is around Rs. 400 crore and it is likely to be completed in three years. In its first phase the cricket stadium will be completed by December 2016. Principal Secretary, Housing Mr. Sadakant informed that in Lucknow a project of sports infrastructure and real estate on a PPP model was being executed in Lucknow on a 137 acres stretch of land. As per the contract the developer would develop a cricket stadium and other sports infrastructure on 71 acres and run it, maintain it for 35 years. The international cricket stadium will have a crowd capacity of 50,000 people and along with this, outdoor and indoor multi-sports stadium will also be constructed.
