Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mr. Akhilesh Yadav Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mr. Akhilesh Yadav has termed the labourers as the first link to development and said it was their toil and hard work that goes in making of buildings and roads. Referring to their significant role in the progress of the state and the nation, Mr. Yadav said that the Samajwadi government was committed to improving their lot and providing them better facilities for growth.

The Chief Minister was speaking at a function today at his official residence held to inaugurate many welfare schemes and disbursement of benefits for labourers. The event was held under the aegis of Uttar Pradesh Bhawan and Sannirman Karmkaar Welfare Board working under the state labour department. Mr. Yadav, under the bicycle help scheme gave away bicycles to 500 beneficiaries. Under the housing scheme, cheque of financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 was given to 12 beneficiaries.
Under this scheme a total of Rs. one lakh is given in two instalments. Two beneficiaries were given Rs. 15,000 each for repairs of their houses. On this occasion, CMS school children and faculty handed over a cheque of Rs. 09 lakh for flood relief in Jammu & Kashmir. The school children led by the founder of CMS Mr. Jagdish Gandhi handed over the cheque to the Chief Minister. Mr. Yadav also said that the state government would work to provide balanced and nutritious cheapily available food to the poor and labour class. For this, the government was mulling over establishing canteens and providing this class Parag Curd.

Referring to the death of labourers in accidents, the Chief Minister said the state government had enhanced the ex-gratia to the families to Rs. 5 lakh from the earlier amount of Rs. 1 lakh. Other than this plans are also afoot to construct crutches for children at workplaces as the labourers work to earn a living. For this, pre-cast temporary crutches so that they can be shifted basedon movement of the labourers. Other than this, Mr. Yadav pointed out the government was also extending a solar energy programme for them under which they are provided with solar panels, bulbs and necessary equipments.
The Chief Minister said the labour department was directly linked to the hard working class and expected from officials that they would register more and more labourers and duly publicize the several welfare schemes run by the state government. Mr. Yadav also pointed out how due to the efforts of the government, more than 300 bank branches and this work will be continued.
PWD and Irrigation Minister Mr. Shivpal Singh Yadav said the labour class contributed in a big way in the progress of the state. He added that the government was making sustained efforts to ensure honour, facilities and enhancing the skills of the labour class. Labour and Employment Minister Mr. Shahid Manzoor in his welcome address informed the gathering of various schemes rolled out by the state government for the labourers and added that labourers in the real estate sector were highly unorganized. He also pointed out that the labour department was trying to get more and more labourers registered by simplifying the process.
Health Minister Mr. Ahmad Hasan said that the Samajwadi government had always worked for the betterment of the poor, farmers and the weaker sections. Principal Secretary Labour Mr. Shailesh Krishna informed that for running the welfare schemes for labour class one percent of the construction cost is taken as cess in the state. Till now, 14 lakh labourers are registered and through cess an amount of Rs. 1400 crore has been collected. He added that the department was trying to increase the registered base of labourers to 25 lakh and Rs. 500 crore will be collected every year for executing various labour welfare schemes.
Also present on the occasion were Mr. Rajendra Chowdhary, Mr. Kailash Yadav, Mr. Brahma Shankar Tripathi, Mr. Iqbal Masood, Mr. Abhishek Mishra and other ministers, Principal Secretary (Information) Mr. Navneet Sehgal, Labour Commissioner Ms. Shalini Prasad, Secretary to CM Mr. Partha Sarthy Sen Sharma, Director Information Dr. Roopesh Kumar and the beneficiaries.
