Friday was a different scene at Lucknow zoo. New toy train, on its inaugural run, had chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, chief secretary Jawed Usmani and ministers Ahmed Hasan and SP Yadav as its first passengers. The new train is here after 44 years.
Though chief minister’s children were also partakers in the joyride, grown-ups could not hide their excitement as train moved and comments started on introducing zoo’s favourite animals on the route. “I wanted to start the train in new year but it got delayed by two months,” said CM before he boarded the train. Till Baradari, he enjoyed the ride. He talked about Lion Safari and said it will promote tourism since its a novel concept.
He appreciated the plantation done by forest department on 100 acre in Kisni forest block in Mainpuri. He said that department failed to save trees planted in Bundelkhand in the last regime. “You show me one surviving tree there,” he said to forest department officers present on the occasion.
The new train is very different from the old one, which has now been preserved as a heritage train in zoo premises.
The new train, procured by Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (RNN), is a chair car. It has four coaches with a seating capacity of 84 adults.
The zoo has planned to run a non-stop commentary on animals that visitors would get to see on-board the way. There would be a bridge and a tunnel that the train would cross on its way.
The new track of the train has been laid with concrete sleepers instead of the old wooden sleepers, which were getting tough to maintain.
